It's the end of the world as we know it (and I feel fine)

Christmas is always about new birth, waiting on the promise of a savior, and God's solution to clear our sins. Jesus was brought into this world through Mary and people came from afar to worship him.

But what if I told you that Christmas was also a time to talk about the end of the world. I am talking about the hard reset of Earth and the rebuilding of all creation. You would think I was watching too many conspiracy theory videos on Youtube.

Advent means "the coming" and in the Christian tradition, we celebrate the first advent and the second. The first advent is Jesus coming into this world through birth to live a full life. The second advent is Jesus coming again to judge the living in the dead.

16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 1 Thessalonians 4:16

It can't be understated how important the second advent is. It is not just the end of the world and the beginning of God's perfect city on Earth, but it will be a time of liquidation and renewal. Every evil thought, system, government, and inkling will be destroyed.

for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night.3 While people are saying, “Peace and safety,” destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. 1 Thessalonians 5:2-3

This is the penultimate fate of the world. It will be a great and terrible day for the express purpose of removing every corrupt bit of creation. That includes personal corruption and global corruption.

Is there any wonder why we are called to be witnesses to the first advent? It is the time for humanity to realize that this life is short and we are not in control of our fate. It is the time to get sick of our own sins and the sins that plague this world. It is time to put our trust in God's only answer to the problem of our failing morality.

4 But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief.5 You are all children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. 1 Thessalonians 5:4-5

Talking about the end of the world and judgment is dark and impolite during Christmas where the main message is peace on earth and goodwill toward men. That would be a warm and fuzzy message. And yet, I must come clean in my convictions. True peace and goodwill can only come from God and the epic saving act of Jesus while on this Earth. He is light and everything else is darkness.

So here is the prayer that every Christian must have: "that we experience the new birth of God's solution to our sins and we wait for the day when the world will be made new again."
